One of my favorite pictures books to use with my students is Flawed Dogs by Berkely Breathed. The pictures alone are worthy of a fun writing assignment. Well, he has followed that up with a novel that includes all the funny yet flawed characters from that book. This book is kind of like a prequel to the picture book and explains how they arrived at the last chance dog pound where that book takes place. It is a very sweet, sometimes sad, look at the life of a dachshund named Sam the Lion. Might make for a fun read aloud.

A beautifully written book! The imagery she created was astounding. I almost felt the dirt and mud with descriptions like, "The soil was so wet from all the rain that it was like digging into raw meat." And, "Mud from the dirty floor oozed through the thin cotton of my nightgown."
I also thought that the alternating points of view was the best way to tell this story. Being in the heads of every character made the atrocities that they encountered even more terrible than the fact that they were most likely things that really could have happened during that time in our history.
This book is well worth the time invested to read it. Keep in mind, though, that is it is not a YA novel and I can't imagine a teenager ever enjoying a book like this.
