This book was republished in its full form years after its initial release. King's introduction explains that this is his chance to show readers the full story behind the characters and pull back in what his editors had removed. I know King is a genius in many rights, but I feel that in this case, he should have trusted the editors. The 1100+ pages of this book frequently dragged and the reader can almost tell what parts had been added back in due to the lack of flow. When the book does pick up, it's brilliant storytelling. I'm curious now, to read the initial publication and see if my hypothesis holds true. All that being said, I did enjoy this book, even if it took me over a month to complete. characters are interesting and the story is an eerie tale of human psychology and sociology.

I find this book fascinating. I found myself actually feeling sympathy for Humbert Humbert. He is hurt at the end and I was so wrapped up in the character, that it became possible to step away from his actions. That being said, when you put the book down and consider the relationship between he and Lolita, it's jarring (to say the least). I think the triumph of this book is that a completely rational person can find some sort of odd "relatability" to Humbert Humbert's heartbreak. The psychology of the characters brings me back each time. When an author can get me to feel bad for the bad guy, I'm impressed.

This book is geared toward teenage readers and is on some high school reading lists now. I found it a quick read, but very deep and moving. The writing is poetic, which took a few pages to get used to but I enjoyed the structure as the book progressed. It helped me make sense of what was going through a young girl's head - fractured and awkward feelings.
