I think Justin is a very gifted writer, and I look forward to reading more from him. My only issues with these stories (aside from--SPOILER ALERT--a cat dying) was that they centered on exactly the type of people I dislike most. People my age or a little younger with no ambition, no goals, the kind of people who will stay stuck in their dead-end towns forever. Justin got these people exactly right--but that meant that sometimes I just got disgusted with them. Still, I think some of these stories will become favorites of mine, and it's a very quick read, so I would recommend it.

This is another case where I wish you could give 3.5 stars, because I don't know if I loved this book as much as some other four star books, but "i liked it" seems too lukewarm. It doesn't denote respect, which I have for this book. To sum it up quickly, The Dolphin People is about a family of Germans after ww2 whose plane crashes in the jungle of Venezuela, where the natives mistake them for dolphins in human form. Predictably, crazy things ensue. One quote about it I read described it as "swiss family robinson for psychopaths," which I think is fairly accurate. I would also say swiss family robinson + cannibal holocaust + nazis, but also funny.

Anyway, we're publishing this in paperback in dec with a new (BETTER) cover and I recommend it. It's also an excellent palate cleanser if you normally don't read anything remotely resembling adventure.

Completely hilarious. In his intro, the author says this is a book for anyone who's ever wondered how they came from their parents, and since I and eveeryone else I know wonders that about me, this was perfect for me.

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. It sounded perfectly pleasant (the story of a young woman teaching english in japan after college while trying to forget her past) but not really my thing. But it's much quirkier, much more sensitive than I had thought it would be, and the main character, Marina, is thoroughly real. I'd add this to the very short list of books about women in their twenties that I actually like.
