A fun book I raced through to get to the end of the mystery of Sam Westing. After I was about 1/3 of the way into it I was wishing I had taken notes on the people, so you might want to do that. I read for the story not to puzzle things out, but anyone out there who is good at that would have fun with it. It's a Newberry winner!...less

Maybe I'm just easy to please, but I really enjoyed this. I had read all the Great Brain books as a kid, so when a friend let me borrow this I jumped on it. I was sad to learn it really isn't all true, but I still think it paints a true picture of early Utah history. The characters are all really fun. Lots of great lessons in the story. One I would be happy to read again....less

Touted as one of the first enduring novels to combine moral instruction with entertainment, I found it full of both. I love all the "a real princess would..." tidbits here and there, making it a great one to read with little girls. The overall story is exciting enough that it would be great for the whole family. After all, Curdie, a 12 year old miner, performs a lot of heroics on Princess Irene's and the whole royal households behalf. Highly recommended....less

Overall a good read. The first 150 pages were slow for me, but I raced through the last 200. Poor Claude, feeling he has a purpose and destination but everything seems to mess up for him. He follows his heart and heads off to war, finding (of all things) peace for himself there.
One I probably need to read other's thoughts on and mull over a lot more.
Interesting side note - I watched a talk on ted.com about 4am then picked up to keep reading the novel. From the time Claude was heading officially out to war till the end of the book, I counted 5 times 4am was mentioned. Interesting......less
