Don't let this one go by. REALLY don't let it go by for religious reasons. First: it's REALLY funny. Laugh-out-loud in public funny.
Second: I can't tell if this guy's a believer or not, but he really seems to "get" Jesus, at least as much as I do! The sex-obsession (Biff's, not Joshua's) gets less funny around page 100, and the WIDE liberties taken with characters and events were little worrisome until I read the epilogue -- one of the best parts of the book.
Third: Joshua's character, however irreverant everything around him, is treated with something more than respect: admiration, love, tenderness, true reverence. Trust me -- I would have felt it if it were not.
Suspend whatever hangups you might have and give this book a fair shot. I give you permission to roll your eyes repeatedly, but see what this author's perspective can teach you. Or just laugh. It's good for you.
Last paragraph of the epilogue:
"Finally, this story was set in a dire time, a deadly serious time, and the world of the first-century Jew under the rule of the Romans would not have been one that easily inspired mirth. It's more than a small anachronism that I portray Joshua having and making fun, yet somehow, I llike to think that while he carried out his sacred mission, Jesus of Nazareth might have enjoyed a sense of irony and the company of a wisecracking buddy. This story is not and never was meant to challenge anyone's faitth; however, if one's faith can be shaken by stories in a humorous novel, one may have a bit more praying to do."
