Ok, so this contained some titillating scenes than I wouldn't normally read, but it was reccomended by a friend so I read it. But I didn't care for it. It was the same old desperate housewife goes home to deal with old family skeletons in the closet and falls in love with a mysterious man. In this case that man is a monk. And may I just add that I am a little tired of the notion that when a middle-aged woman has an identity crisis the only way to "find herself" is to have a sexual affair with some stranger all the while having ridiculously meaningful dreams and painting colorful, lustful paintings when before the only art she produced was kitschy shadow boxes. The main character's remorse was pretty nonexistent since she finally achieved the "solitude of being". Maybe I am just judgmental, but it was pretty contrived and snobby to me. ...less

So, this book was written with beautiful imagery, and very thorough launguage and story-telling, but the whole thing was just depressing. After I was about halfway through I spent a whole day reading so that I could find out what happens and be done with feeling so worried over the characters. The characters were all very engaging and it was a page-turner, but for all the wrong reasons, I think. Some people said that the book is heart-wrenching and yet hopeful. I didn't get the hopeful vibe at the end since the Henry family spent 25 years being ruled by circumstance and there was no sign that they would be able to overcome tragedy if they faced it again. The Simpson family was a sweet story so that was nice to read about. However, until I finished the book, I couldn't enjoy the happy scenes because it felt like every time I turned the page something new and even sadder happened. I read in fear. So, I wouldn't really reccomend this book unless you want to be sad....less

"This has been my favorite book for years! I wish their was a sequel. I identify with Sister Luke in so many ways, though I have never attempted to be a nun. Her strength and self-examination are tremendous.

"I read this as a child and recently reread it. It affected me much more this time. The way it deals with free will and utilitarian ideals is so deep even though it was written for young adults. It is one of my all-time favorites.
