I think we are already a pretty creative family. I don't know what this book would have been like for those people that claim they can't do anything creative. Blah to them. Everyone can. Though the author emphasizes that you can be creative with your children in ways other than artsy crafty things I think that's still what most of us think.
She has several little specific projects throughout the book...how to sew this little bag or make this pencil roll or things like that that are nice enough. I really took a lot more ideas just from her narrative about how her family does things. How they make celebrations special and show gratitude to each other and spend time together creating.
I'd have give it 5 stars if there were more pictures. The ones that are included are lovely but for a book on this topic I'm a visual girl. (less)

This book just makes me happy about everything. I adore the little photo that represents each chapter. I've read it a few times but this time it had been long enough that I'd forgotten all about my favorite parts:
Her parents telling her she'd come from the gypsies.
"I later discovered that in order to be a good athlete one must care intensely what is happening with a ball, even if one doesn't have possession of it. This was ultimately my failure: My inability to work up a passion for the locaion of balls."
The wig and the fuzzy slippers. "It's my real hair!" "They're my actual feet."

I went through it pretty quickly for such a thick book. It wasn't never-put-it-down amazing but it was pick-it-up-an-hour-later good.
A little like Sex and the City for mommies. I like that it sort of reinforced what I think I'm all about anyway....don't make a huge deal out of the little earthquakes moments in our lives and do make a huge deal out of the little things that can bring us happiness. And I do like that the women friends were a huge important part of each other's lives without being overly emotional and sappy and ignoring the husbands and family. (less)

Sadly, if there hadn't been an italicized mention of Arrested Development in the first chapter, I don't know if I'd have even made it that far. After that I went searching for reviews and decided not to go on. Then I skimmed the last chapter or two and am not too sad that I've decided to skip it. My 11-year-old sister loves Princess Academy....maybe I'll try that instead.(less)

Much to Lifetime-Original-Movie for me. I didn't identify meaningfully with any of the characters. And I'm sure that while that is a common outcome for many, it left me feeling more despair than hope. I wasn't drawn enough to anyone to really know who to root for, but I didn' feel like anyone ended up happy and resolved in the end. Maybe it's time for me to go read Lord of the Rings again :)(less)

In the beginning it seemed almost cliche...like you'd be able to predict too much about the characters just from their basic descriptions. That quickly changed, at the second chapter really. Each chapter brings a new narrator and their thoughts, memories and conversations made each character amazing. I found myself in every single one of them in some way. By the middle of the book I couldn't stop reading and by the end I was sobbing harder than I can remember doing. The story is unexpected and beautiful. Though it seems like it could do the opposite to some, it really felt like it made my faith stronger. I spent the time after I finished it piecing the parts of the story together that made the ending all fit perfectly. It's like she wrote it backwards. (less)
