I don't get this complaint either. Hard sci-fi stories have a far worse googlies/snarfle problem. And most of the terms are obvious after a little contemplation:

Fraa -> Frere (brother)
Saunt -> Saint (with more complexity to the meaning, obviously)
etc..

It takes a little more work to figure out the correspondence between various saunts and human philosophers/mathematicians, but that's half the fun. :)

    			  This is a masterpiece. Read it.

You don't get into the "meat" of the book for at least 300 pages, but given what Stephenson is creating here, in retrospect that's not really surprising. If anything I'm surprised it didn't take a whole "Cycle" of books to get through all of the ideas.

    			  This is a collection of short stories in a mix of lengths from the mid-range (twenty pages or more) to some that are very short indeed (just a paragraph or two) and Borges shows that he is the master of both. What ties them all together is a treatment of the existential and the philosophical-- questions of reality, eternity, conspiracy, identity, the supernatural, the metaphysical and the fantastic. Yet, if I had to describe his style concisely I would call it "rational" or "scholarly". His writing is riddled with allusions and references, and in some places even footnotes, that in the space of a few words span hundreds of years and thousands of miles. In this way even the shortest story has unusual weight and gravity.

Borges gets lumped in with the magical realists, which does not feel quite right to me. I cannot deny that there is something uniquely South American about his writing, but I think that he has made something unique that in turn paved the way for magical realism-- and probably The Twilight Zone, too.

    			  Reading The Road reminded me both of The Stand and parts of The Dark Tower series, both by Stephen King. Whether that is a pro or a con depends on your taste, I suppose. The story-telling in The Road is considerably better, in my opinion, and it is also a much shorter read (I nearly finished it in one sitting). The manner in which the dialog is punctuated (or rather not punctuated) is a bit jarring at first but I quickly got used to it. This book is really, really bleak.
