This is an excellent book for poets and teachers. June Jordan's mission is far reaching in this book, which teaches both the methods and philosophy behind writing (specifically poetry). Besides giving very useful information on how to formulate workshops, readings, collections of work (i.e. something like this book), there is a good amount of nicely crafted poetry and a wide range of voices within the collection. Two of my favorites in this book are "Poetry should ride the bus" by Ruth Forman and "June Jordan's Guidelines for Critiquing a Poem."...less

"I got this book for my younger cousin for christmas, and wound up picking up one for myself. It is fun, experimental, and celebrates the impulse to "draw outside the lines."

"Some of the stories in this book are just so funny, and I mean laugh-out-loud funny. "A Plague of Tics" is one of the best in this collection. Not every story can live up to that standard, but Sedaris sets a high bar for himself.

Although this is the only collection I have read from Melanie Rae Thon, I should look for more of her work. This collection of stories is brilliant; the use of language, space, and efficiency in these stories is just breath taking. Her stories wind around you, building slowly, painfully. She has an excellent sense of story telling, and the stories she tells here shine with humanity. "He tries to be tender. He prays to be strong." ...less
