The Stranger by Albert Camus
“I knew that I had shattered the harmony of the day, the exceptional silence of a beach where I'd been happy. Then I fired four more times at the motionless body where the bullets lodged without leaving a trace. And it was like knocking four quick times on the door of unhappiness. ”
Albert Camus

The Stranger by Albert Camus
“For the first time in a long time I thought about Maman. I felt as if I understood why at the end of her life she had taken a 'fiancé,' why she had played at beginning again. Even there, in that home where lives were fading out, evening was a kind of wistful respite. So close to death, Maman must have felt free then and ready to live it all again. Nobody, nobody had the right to cry over her. And I felt ready to live it all again too.”
Albert Camus

Deus Irae by Roger Zelazny
"Of the 36 sci-fi novels, nine mainstream novels, one children's book and over 120 short stories that cult author Philip K. Dick produced before his premature death at age 53, in 1982, only two creations were done in collaboration with another auth..." Read more of this review »

As someone Alaska's age exactly, who also lost my mother young and also struggles with guilt and many of the same mental issues she does, this is a book that will certainly give me a lot to chew on long past my finishing it.

Pierre Choderlos de Laclos
“Madame de Merteuil, though indeed a woman highly regarded, has perhaps only one fault: she overestimates her ability; she's a skilful driver who enjoys guiding her chariot between rocks and precipices and whose sole justification is that she remains unscathed. We can certainly praise but it would be unwise to follow her; she agrees with that view and condemns herself for it.”
Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, Les Liaisons Dangereuses

Edith Wharton
“it is almost as stupid to let your clothes betray that you know you are ugly as to have them proclaim that you think you are beautiful.”
Edith Wharton, The House of Mirth

Tina Fey
“With that exchange, a cosmic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasn’t there to be cute. She wasn’t there to play wives and girlfriends in the boys’ scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not fucking care if you like it.”
Tina Fey, Bossypants

Ernest Hemingway
“don't ask me a lot of questions if you don't like the answers”
Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises

Wallace Stegner
“Where do I belong in this country? Where is home?”
Wallace Stegner, The Big Rock Candy Mountain
