This is my Mom's second best book. It's a kick-ass thriller about ne'er do-wells, a secretary and oil companies. Does it sound as if it is "ripped from today's headlines?!" Well, consider that it was written in 1975, was a best-seller then, and today reads as fresh as it did over 30 years ago. The lead character, one Anna Peters, was one of the first modern female thriller characters. Don't take my word for it: Mom won an Edgar (the Mystery Writers of America's version of the Oscar) for her. More? Well, Alvin Toffler, the writer of "Future Shock," and Newt Gingrich's pal, took two pages out of that book to trash my Mum, which is as good an endorsement as you will ever get. Go read it....less

Many years ago, I heard a band called Pussy Galore. They are great, and they convinced me that I too could make a record. (And, I did: Three, in fact.) This boom has convinced me that the definitive work on comic books has still yet to be writ, though I give big props to Michael Chabon's Kavalier and Clay and Gerard Jones' Men of Tomorrow. This is an incredible book -- yes, it about sports and yes, it is about a sport no American cares about. It also is a brilliant cultural study and, if I dare say it, attempts the same thing I did in my own book, which was to use a sport as a cultural mirror. If you enjoyed my book, then beg, borrow, steal this one. And if you didn't, well, fuck that and go read this anyway. ...less
