While I was pretty young (Freshman in HS) reading this, it was still spectacularly poignant. I had, of course, seen the movie, so I'm sure that contributed to my understanding. ]]>
I truly did NOT enjoy this book. (don't know why I hadn't remembered to rate it.)
It was gloomy, and whiny, and self-important, and I didn't find that I had ANY empathy for the characters, least of all the protagonist.
But I read it forever ago, so that's all the detail I can muster. ]]>

I'll save you the details regarding the drama with my public library and checking out this book. To say that it's now I'm finally reading/reviewing this book, instead of September, is thanks mostly in part TO the library, and that will give you the necessary information.
This series, despite its NYT status, still remains lesser-known in these parts; I find myself touting it anytime I mention it, only to ORDER the dang thing AT our public library.
Barring several obstacles, I REALLY want to teach it - I would add it to my hon. sophomore curriculum as part of a series of dystopias. (LOVE 'em) The Hunger Games IS good, and it's accessible.
Moving on to my actual thoughts on the novel: it's certainly slow to start, but Collins has so deftly woven an intricate cliffhanger by the end of the novel, that the reader simply doesn't mind.
Now I pine for the next in the series, an emotion EVERY good writer relies on. ]]>
