If you've never read CS Lewis, this may be the book to read. If you don't believe in God, this might be a good place to start as far as objective, not pounding-over-your-head-you-must-believe-this-or-else kind of thing. If you do believe in God, this will cause you to see your view of God in different ways--not extra-biblical, but more precisely biblical.

The brilliance of Lewis is that he is able to take very difficult things to understand and explain them in perfectly reasonable ways with allegory and analogy.

This is a sappy book, but it's turning the corner into something really compelling. It may get another star by the time it's done.

UPDATE:

FINALLY finished this book, thanks to my wife who finished reading it to me while I drove us to my parents.

I still think the whole Shining Barrier thing is a little much, but the final chapter on Sheldon's grief I thought was the best part of the book--mostly because I see it as helpful to those who are going through the grief process currently.
