I just finished Dawn of Destiny, by Lee Stephen, and I liked it.
One big difference between this book and others like the STARFIST series or the Heritage/Legacy/Inheritance series, or even Starship Troopers, is that those other books essentially took the Twentieth- and Twenty-first-Century US military and transported it into a science fiction setting. So the organization, rank structure, and overall military culture were already familiar to most readers before they even started on the books.
That's not the case here. Stephen invents a totally new military from the ground up, and it's not like anything with which I was familiar. At first, I didn't like this, and I found myself saying things like, "There's no way that would ever happen." But then I realized that the author is (probably deliberately) making sure that the Earth Defense Network is a completely different organization from the US military.
What I liked:
The action scenes were extremely well done. Stephen obviously has a natural talent for this.
The book was not "hardware-oriented". That is, you won't find long passages devoted to detailed descriptions of the equipment and weaponry. In fact, you will find almost no information about hardware in this book.
What I didn't like:
In several places in the book, the main character's religious beliefs are mentioned, but they are never explained in any detail. All we are able to ascertain from this book is that the main character believes in God. Is he a Christian? A Muslim? A Hindu? We just don't know.
The Bottom Line: I liked this book, and I recommend it to fans of military science fiction. ]]>
