Fucking hilarious! If you want a book that you pick up and laugh your ass off page to page this is it. Ennis is taking it to organized religion but actually has some insightful things to say ( in between Papal orgies and foul mouthed rabbits). There is a real interesting thing going on with Jesus and Wormwood about telling there respective fathers to go fuck themselves. Also i really like the line in the book about how all Jesus wanted was people to treat each other right and all they ended up doing was using his name for wars and mistreatment. This is the Ennis I love to see. Not as good as Preacher but then again what is going to be....less

well 'What I learned from this book" was not to buy manga no matter how tempted I am because it is set in a video game universe I love. Pretty much one giant stereotype, which is sad seeing how the Shin Megami Tensei universe is so unique. If you like unreconizable art and nudity that makes no sense by all means jump aboard. I prefer my nudity to make sense dammit!...less

Ill be reviewing this book as a whole for the series due to the fact I dont want to go through all 28 volumes on here. This title comes up a lot in interviews with various comic creators like Frank Miller, and with good reason. I believe the page count is somewhere around 8700 pages ( according to the ever correct Wikipedia) with no pages a waste. I would have thought with that many volumes and pages that you would have a throw-away story here or there but you dont. Each tale is a slice of life in Tokugawa Japan. You get a feel of the times and people in Japan through Ogami Itto and Daigoros travels. Interwoven are assassination tales, moral diliemas and the core story of revenge. I cant stress enough that each and every chapter is not just good or passable but intrigueing and compelling in a unique way each and everytime. Despite its daunting page count its not that slow a read with alot of the story told without words via the wonderful art of Goseki Kojima. I believe one of the books has the line " The story of a man,a boy and a country all on the road to hell". This is an apt description of the tale. I believe even the great Lavar Burton himself would recommend this book to all, not just comic book fans. Its is quite and investment cost wise but worth every penny ...less

I’m not quite sure when I first noticed the existence of the New Gods, it might have been the "DC Superpowers" figure of Darkseid that first captured my heart and started many battles between my friend and I on how to pronounce his name "Dark-Side" or "Dark-seed". I was on the losing side on that battle in the end I became a convert to how it is correctly pronounced. Either way im an easy sell on most things if the main man from Apokolips is hanging around so this wasn’t a stretch for me to get into. The book is made up of 4 titles interwoven in chronological order of release. "Superman’s Pal: Jimmy Olsen”,” New Gods”,” The Forever People" and” Mister Miracle". It takes awhile to see how these books start interacting and truthfully it doesn’t happen till the 2nd collection. The art is amazing and there is just something about how Kirby draws technology that is so unique that, more-so than his characters, you find cohesion in the backgrounds and technology that surround the players. The Fourth World is really a product of its time and I do feel like im missing something not being as well versed as I could be in the early 70s and the psychedelic movement. Either way it doesn’t take a student of the times to respect and enjoy the freedom and expression the Forever People embody issue to issue, or the bohemian world of the Furies in "Jimmy Olsen". I got hold of the books mainly for the battle between New Genesis and Apokolips but im staying because all the other characters and events are actually compelling and interesting, with the exception of Don Rickles.
For some reason Don Rickles is in the book for 2 issues. Its god awful. I don’t get it and I don’t want to get it. The only celebrity I want to see is either Dr. J or Meatloaf because they were welcome additions to the back of comic books asking me to help them in various ways.
