There is no denying that Kurt and Alan were extremely unfortunate in the hand each were dealt, and that their intellectual gifts came with a high price tag; one I would not be willing to pay. But this fictionalized account is of a grim and joy...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/How%20very,%20very%20bleak.%20And%20angst!%20Lots%20and%20lots%20of%20angst.%20There%20is%20no%20denying%20that%20Kurt%20and%20Alan%20were%20extremely%20unfortunate%20in%20the%20hand%20each%20were%20dealt,%20and%20that%20their%20intellectual%20gifts%20came%20with%20a%20high%20price%20tag;%20one%20I%20would%20not%20be%20willing%20to%20pay.%20But%20this%20fictionalized%20account%20is%20of%20a%20grim%20and%20joyless%20existence%20more%20in%20keeping%20with%20a%20gothic%20romance%20novel%20than%20insight%20into%20the%20lives%20of%20two%20very%20troubled%20and,%20at%20times,%20unlucky%20men.%20%0D%0A%0D%0A%22In%20the%20end,%20she%20wasn't%20able%20to%20float%20free%20of%20the%20weight%20of%20the%20earth%20or%20her%20class.%22%0D%0A%0D%0Aor%0D%0A%0D%0A%22He%20noted%20the%20uselessness%20of%20his%20earlier%20scholarship%20against%20the%20crudest%20artillery.%20Faith,%20metaphysics,%20theology--%20impotent%20rhymes%20in%20the%20face%20of%20atrocity.%22%0D%0A%0D%0AOut%20of%20their%20novel,%20these%20sentences%20seem%20as%20morose%20and%20troubled%20as%20a%20teenager.%20In%20context%20they%20do%20better,%20but%20still%20seem%20heavy%20in%20a%20story%20that%20does%20not%20involve%20a%20character%20named%20Heathcliff.%20It%20does%20not%20surprise%20me%20that%20the%20chapter%20describing%20the%20Vienna%20Circle%20or%20the%20one%20focused%20on%20a%20conversation%20between%20Alan%20and%20Jane%20over%20a%20chess%20game%20are%20the%20best%20two%20in%20this%20peculiar%20gothic%20tale.%20A%20gothic%20romance%20centered%20around%20two%20uber%20geeks%20I%20find%20a%20bit%20hard%20to%20wrap%20my%20mind%20around.%0D%0A%20%0D%0A%20%20The%20misfortunes%20of%20Godel%20and%20Turing%20are%20pretty%20brutal,%20but%20were%20their%20lives%20really%20that%20miserable%2024%2F7%3F%20It%20seems%20a%20fictionalization%20could%20have%20included%20at%20least%20a%20particle%20of%20happiness%20here%20or%20there.%20The%20level%20of%20angst%20is%20cloying,%20and%20could%20even%20be%20too%20much%20for%20a%20novel%20like%20Twilight.%20But%20this%20is%20a%20slim%20book,%20and%20it%20is%20an%20interesting%20perspective,%20so%20might%20be%20worth%20reading%20(I%20suppose%20troubled%20geeks%20with%20real%20problems%20could%20be%20a%20nice%20change%20from%20teenage-vampire%20woes).%20%0D%0A%0D%0A%20I%20just%20wish%20the%20tone%20hadn't%20been%20quite%20so%20heavy%20all%20the%20time%20(though,%20sadly,%20there%20are%20times%20it%20is%20perfectly%20appropriate).%20Alan%20Turing%20and%20Kurt%20Godel%20had%20some%20horrible%20things%20happen%20to%20them,%20and%20probably%20weren't%20quite%20on%20the%20same%20frequency%20as%20other%20people,%20but%20they%20don't%20seem%20to%20be%20gloomy%20individuals!%20Paranoid,%20delusional,%20at%20times%20bizarre--%20sure.%20But%20a%20novel%20that%20is%20trying%20to%20channel%20its%20inner%20Bronte%20might%20want%20to%20%22create%22%20characters%20that%20are%20more%20Byronic%20than%20these%20two%20in%20order%20to%20match%20the%20mood,%20or%20ease%20up%20a%20bit!%20The%20desolate%20tone%20of%20the%20novel%20couldn't%20quite%20make%20the%20two%20characters%20seem%20like%20troubled%20artists.%20The%20tone%20and%20the%20characters%20seem%20like%20two%20different%20novels%20stuffed%20together,%20and%20the%20contrast%20was%20too%20jarring%20for%20me.%20And%20I%20can't%20help%20wondering%20if%20the%20author%20prefers%20crushing%20on%20mathematicians%20rather%20than%20poets%20and%20vampires%20(if%20so,%20she%20has%20my%20sympathy)">more...</a>]]></body>

          <body><![CDATA[Books written by celebrities about themselves are not something I seek out. But the Tour de France is one of the few sporting events I will watch on T.V. if I don't have to go to any effort. So I was intrigued about a man who fought an extremely nasty type of cancer, and then went on to win the Tour...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/Books%20written%20by%20celebrities%20about%20themselves%20are%20not%20something%20I%20seek%20out.%20But%20the%20Tour%20de%20France%20is%20one%20of%20the%20few%20sporting%20events%20I%20will%20watch%20on%20T.V.%20if%20I%20don't%20have%20to%20go%20to%20any%20effort.%20So%20I%20was%20intrigued%20about%20a%20man%20who%20fought%20an%20extremely%20nasty%20type%20of%20cancer,%20and%20then%20went%20on%20to%20win%20the%20Tour%20de%20France%20seven%20times.%20A%20friend%20who%20bicycled%20across%20the%20United%20States%20and%20all%20around%20Scotland,%20not%20surprisingly,%20had%20a%20copy,%20so%20I%20borrowed%20it.%0D%0A%0D%0A%20I%20don't%20feel%20that%20Mr.%20Armstrong%20glossed%20over%20anything%20about%20himself%20in%20order%20to%20make%20himself%20look%20good.%20I%20was%20impressed%20with%20a%20certain%20degree%20of%20deprecation%20about%20the%20shallowness%20of%20his%20pre-cancer%20self.%20And%20he%20makes%20no%20attempt%20to%20conceal%20how%20HARD%20he%20works!%20He%20does%20not%20try%20to%20make%20it%20sound%20like%20it%20was%20easy%20or%20no%20big%20deal.%20His%20tone%20was%20extremely%20appreciative%20of%20the%20people%20in%20his%20life,%20and%20very%20grateful%20for%20everything%20he%20has.%20As%20%22inspiring%20stories%22%20go,%20this%20is%20pretty%20good.%20And%20the%20writing%20is%20agreeable.%20Ms.%20Jenkins%20seems%20to%20have%20done%20a%20pretty%20good%20job%20with%20Mr.%20Armstrong's%20almost%20jerky%20descriptions%20of%20events%20and,%20what%20seems%20like,%20his%20bounding%20from%20topic%20to%20topic.%20I%20would%20not%20hesitate%20to%20recommend%20it%20to%20a%20friend%20in%20need%20of%20a%20pick-me-up.%20And%20I%20really%20enjoy%20his%20descriptions%20of%20the%20torture%20that%20is%20the%20Tour%20de%20France.%0D%0A">more...</a>]]></body>
