"I think this benefited a lot from being one of the first memoirs of depression by a known writer. But in the light of so much later literature on the condition, it's a fairly bloodless exploration of the topic.

"A little self-conscious in the amount of research and examples, but overall, a really good book. A lot of interesting anecdotes and writings of writers with the illness (Berryman, Lowell, Woolf among them) that give a lot of insight.

""Old stereotypes" from the subtitle is right -- the book's full of them! And I'm not sure he could have misread Plath and Dickinson more badly.
