It's hard to adaquately explain what I loved so much about this book. It a book that I wanted to come back to day after day, not because I was revited to the plot's cliffhangers, the way most page-turners engage readers, but because I relished the experience of reading it. That's the best way I can describe it. It's not just a book, but an experience. I valued my time in the setting and with the characters, the narrator, Death, being my favorite. I can't recommend this book any higher. I want to like this book more than I do. I absolutely adored the movie, though that could be what is preventing me from liking the book. Eggers made some big changes to the story. That, in and of itself, wouldn't be so bad except that I think his changes diminished the emotional impact that the story could have, and did have in the movie. When I left the movie, I felt that everything had built up to the emotional climax, which I connected very strongly with. I didn't feel that way about the book. I was also disappointed in the quality of writing in it. I know Eggers can write because I've read another one of his books. I got the impression here, though, that he was trying too hard to write a children's book, which felt forced in some places.
