Good start. I'm not wild about the main characters, but they have potential...as does the series. I shall forge ahead.

Best yet. Fairly complex. Very unlikeable characters, barring our heroine and hero and the kid.

Good series! And quite different for me. Very late 19th/VERY early 20th century New York.

Smite, however, is definitely the most interesting.

5 stars for the series and for this book. It isn't a romance; it's about crime and punishment and justice and injustice and people. Well, yeah, and there's romance. :-)

“It’s all right,” she said. “You’re through.”

“Jesus,” he finally managed, pushing water off his face. “Jesus Christ and John the Baptist. For that matter, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.” Still not enough. He needed to reach back to the Old Testament for this. “Obadiah. Nebuchadnezzar. Methuselah and Job.”

“Be calm,” she said, taking him by the shoulders. “Be calm. And there are women in the Bible, you know.”

“Yes. As I recall it, they were trouble, every last one.”
