I bought this book for my son for when he gets older (old enough to read at least) and it is really really cool. The story is told cinematically -- mostly in black and white charcoal/pencil illustrations with some full pages of text interspersed. What can I say? It's a gorgeous book with an obvious love for early silent pictures. particularly those of Georges Meleis. It's just the coolest graphic novel that you could buy for a kid currently or any adult who digs comics, old movies, history, Paris etc. etc. I can't say enough good stuff about this book....less

As far as celebrity boigraphies/autobiographies go, this one's pretty chaste. No big revelations on who's a jerk or a pervert and yet in spite of that (heh, heh) it manages to be very interesting and to impart a real sense of Lauren Bacall as a person. I liked it and her love and reverence for Humphrey Bogart comes through on every page and actually made me want to learn more about Bogie (rather than Bacall) after reading this book....less

I know this book is supposed to be all quirky post-modern/Victorian and that lots of people think it's amazing. Me... not so much. I just got the impression that the author was just a little too pleased with himself and his interjections into the story itself. While I recognize the merit/intelligence of said exposition, I guess I just really wanted a good, straight-forward fiction and not a lesson on the dichotomies of the Victorian psyche or the sly referneces to god, destiny, the power of the author. I dunno. I LIKED the story, I really did, but a lot of times, the exposition and extranneous stuff sorted of bogged me down. It's not a bad book and in fact lots of folks would tell you it's a GREAT book. I guess I just wanted to be taken away by the story and not blown away by the technique....less
