Omg! I read a graphic novel!
I was recommended others but none of them were at the library. This looked interesting and a nice quick read. Surprisingly, I even enjoyed it.
But seriously...the author is a Russian peasant who grew up during the Soviet period and this is his life work. It's deceptively simple and dreamlike in narrative. His life is completely ordinary by Russian standards yet hard to fathom for Western people....less

Surprisingly complex. I'll admit I saw the movie first. I was not overly impressed with the movie but I had heard the book was quite different. They are hard to compare. The movie version's characters are so flat and unchanging. The narrative is forced and unbelievable.
The book is so completely different. The characters learn and grow across generations as the past is uncovered, most of which was never even mentioned in the movie. The prose is often simple but poetic at the same time.
I read this at the same time as 100 years of solitude and it was an interesting mix. I was not ready for the bits of magical realism present in this book so I started getting the two mixed up a bit as I read. Regardless, I loved the mix of myth and fact. It spiced up what would have been a rather bland historic storyline....less

I almost gave this 4 stars. As other reviewers have said, it can be hard to follow, he has a scattered random style and the best way to truly enjoy it is if you read for the sake of reading. Otherwise so many of the odder, more random incidents seem unnecessary but the visuals he provides are priceless.
I attempted to read this once before and didn't make it through. There are 2 or 3 sections which simply drag. Personally, I thought the war/politics side was the slow going part for me but maybe it's different for everyone.
However, my main fear was that the end would simply ramble on until it suddenly stopped and I would be left completely unsatisfied. In fact, it was quite the opposite. It's beautiful, moving, and magical...and it sums up the whole book perfectly...all in less than 5 pages! So even though it's a tough read at times, it's well worth it to keep on reading....less
