Okay, what I liked most about this book is that I could read it straight through in German in one sitting. That means that it had enough tension and a sympathetic enough character and was low enough on unnecessary description that I could actually get lost in the story and forget the mechanics of reading in another language. It's called Unique in the original British, I think. ...less

I think you have to be in the right frame of mind to read this. I tried a couple years ago but was in the middle of moving, and didn't finish. But this time I was tearing my hair out over trying to get my main character in the book I'm writing to speak to me, not to mention the absurdity of the whole idea of writing a book and trying to publish it, and I just needed the bite this book has. It's great for a day when you would otherwise scarf too much chocolate in consolation, or when you wish you could get together with other writers and vent. Funny, in a dark and desperate sort of way (and of course, very well written).
Oh yeah, it's a nonfiction book about writing. Ann Lamott is a published novelist (adult books) and teaches writing at a university....less

I LOVED this book! Loved the way this retelling of Rumplestilskin was fit into a real setting, loved the way even despicable characters had their moments when we felt sorry for them, loved the magic and the mystery. I loved the words, too. I'm living in a non-English speaking country and sometimes I feel starved for words, and by the time I got to page 2 it was all I could do not to stuff the whole book in my mouth and devour it. Lovely!...less

"This is an awesome book! It's a retelling of the Tam Lin legend, and takes place in Elizabethan England. I loved how Pope makes the characters feel modern, despite living in the 1500s. (This in comparison to the fairy-like people.)

This is a nice one for kids who love physics but who can't understand A Briefer History of Time yet. It's kind of Magic School Bus for middle grade readers. The story was okay, nothing too spectacular, but all right. The bit that I really liked was the discussion on how the matter we are physically made of ultimately originated in the center of a star, and so we are, in essence, the children of stars. ...less
