I'm a sucker for food heritage books. I mostly enjoyed this one, in which the author travels to Italy to try to find the most authentic antecedent for her family's Italian American ravioli recipe.
At the same time, though, I was unable to let go ofn my irritation that she actually thought she was going to find some kind of personal truth and meaning in the history of ravioli...I want to learn to make the Abruzzo food that my grandmother cooked for me when she was still living, but I'm not out to make a spiritual journey of it.

Though I didn't find it as arresting as Perdido Street Station, I enjoyed this. It's a crime novel set in an imaginary Eastern Europe -- with fantastic elements, but it never quite moves over into urban fantasy.

I feared reading this book because it had the potential to be so self indulgent, but Adam Ant writes pretty honestly and not very melodramatically about his life. It's not the most eloquent memoir in the world (or the least), but it took me through Adam's troubled childhood, the punk and post-punk London music scenes and explained more recent, unhappy appearances in the news.
