Yup, a permanent escape! I confess I just read The Shack. Christian fiction. Need I say more? (No, actually, I read it because so many students and others here have been talking about it so I read it because I felt I should at least know what people are talking about. Not bad, as that genre goes.

I love Bill Bryson! I assume you've read Notes from a Small COuntry, right? Some time, pick up Mother Tongue and Made in America, his 2 books about the English language--you won't read them straight through (it'd overwhelm you with detail) but it is fascinating--how our words and expressions originated, etc.

This is a book I recommend a lot! She is less traditional in both her coming to Christianity and her approach to it. I also admire (actually, I am in awe!) her intellectual approach to scriptures and her passion for digging deeper into the word.

Jack, what did YOU think?

Of course, a must-read classic. What I appreciated on this time through it was how immersed I was in the characters worldview, rather than being a white European person looking in on their worldview. Thus, when the white authorities come in, it seems so illogical and out of balance.

Loved this! I'm sure most people love the "Eat" part and I did like it (also salivated a lot!) but it was a bit "cute" (in the way that Annie Lamott gets to "cute" for me--too self aware and too much hamming it up) but I really loved the "Pray" part in Indonesia--much more thoughtful and even soft and slow, the way I imagine her own experience was there. And I love, love, love the fact that Richard-from-Texas calls her "Groceries." Go read this book. Really! I was determined to only like it but I liked it a LOT and, more importantly, I want to own it and I want to recommend it to others...
