I purposely went into this book with absolutely no idea what it was about. Chick books are usually not my thing, but I thought I would give it a read considering I would eventually see the movie. So the book had one thing on me - surprise. I had no idea it was about vampires, so that helped keep me in a little suspense. This book definitely has its audience, however, and I could see how it could appeal to the younger hopeless romantic type. Way too much "feeling development" for me. I look for a little more progression. All in all, a good book, albeit a tad on the slow side....less

I am a science & technology fan so this book had me hooked! Crichton's books always bring a well-researched edge and a new meaning to the category of SCIENCE fiction, as in his book Jurassic Park. This book was all about nanotechnology, and used true facts about the field to extrapolate into its potential until it is taken too far. Such was the basis in Jurassic Park, when the genetic technology was used without enough respect and due diligence to deal with it responsibly. In much the same formula, Prey tells about scientists in the nanotechnology field that create a swarm of "tiny machine" particles that are self-sustaining, self-replicating, and are programmed to do whatever it takes to survive, including evolving at a rapid pace. Foolishly they release these particles into the wild to see how they adapt and find themselves on the brink of the perfect man-made plague.
If this plot sounds far-fetched, you will be surprised how Crichton is able to make this story come frighteningly alive and you will find yourself wondering if something like this could happen. I don't want to give any of it away, but I found that near the end, the story took a turn into a much less believable, but still entertaining plot line. Also, I found the language to be a little too harsh. That being said, I still rate this book a 4 out of 5 for such a compelling and suspenseful delivery....less

Another great book in this great series. Terry Brooks has the ability to weave an interesting and captivating plot while keeping the reader guessing and avoiding predictability. Fantasy books can easily fall into the category of the "same old same old" but he comes up with new and well-thought out ideas that capture the imagination....less

Once again, the comparisons between this book as well as the first book in the series and the Lord of the Rings are numerous, but no disrespect to Tolkien, I think I like this series better (see my review of The Sword of Shannara.) A very good and captivating story, I was definitely not bored with this book. Even though it could be fairly predictable at times, the plot had enough mystery in it to keep me interested. One more thing I like about these books is the lack of vulgarity of any kind. If this book were a movie, it would either be rated PG or PG-13, depending on how the violence might be portrayed (there isn't much of it.) A great read!...less

Clive Cussler is one of my favorite fallbacks when I just want to be entertained and don't look too hard at the story. Like watching an Indiana Jones movie, his books are full of unrealistic scenarios and way too much adventure to be taken seriously. This is my latest read in the Dirk Pitt series, which includes the book Sahara, which they turned into a movie starring Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt....less

A very good book that follows along the same lines as the Lord of the Rings and some other fantasy books in many ways. The similarities between this and Lord of the Rings were very numerous, which at first bothered me but after getting into the story, I found myself enjoying it more than anything I have read of Tolkien. In fact, I believe that this book was very likely one of the influences to Peter Jackson in adapting the Lord of the Rings into a movie, as some of the scenes in that movie bore more resemblance to this book than Lord of the Rings. Simply put, it is a lot like Lord of the Rings, but a faster-paced, more involving story which is what is needed to capture my short attention span and keep me in suspense....less
