The niacin in corn cannot be absorbed without the addition of slaked lime. This fact was not known to the early American settlers, who died of pellagra because of consumption of corn without the necessary additive.
This book can only be improved upon by the addition of color drawings, photos, or pictures of the plants described, and additions to the list of wicked plants. Very informative read that has sensitized me to dangerous plants. I actually recognized a spurge when I went to the nursery the other day!
