Two parts of a four/five part story that was never finished because the author died in a concentration camp in 1942. She chronicles the invasion of Paris and France's capitulation to Germany. She was also part of those fleeing the German regime and ultimately became a victim of Nazi brutality. The story is beautifully written--a masterpiece of detail and description. Nemirovsky contrasts reactions of Parisians while describing the furor of evacuation and occupation. Her personal story is as interesting and tragic as the stories she weaves in this book. Take off the blinders with this read! Levitt shows just how duped Americans really are by using economic data to prove the disparity between what we think is moral and what we actually do. He draws parallels between sumo wrestlers and school teachers, real estate agents and the Ku Klux Klan, and more to show that correlations exist where no one would ever think and how those correlations influence the way we live. There is a hidden side to everything and that is very freaky!!!! ]]>
