The story of Philippe Petit, and his amazing tightrope walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. This is a wonderful read-aloud. I've used it with several different groups of elementary students.

Handle with Care is a deeply moving book. It's about a young married couple who have a baby born with a debilitating disease. The child, Willow, has a syndrome that causes broken bones at the slightest movement. However, she also turns out to be an incredibly gifted child. Willow's parents decide to sue the doctor who delivered Willow, claiming the physician withheld information that might have caused the mother to abort if she had known Willow's true condition. The novel is full of moral and emotional twists and turns, and has an ending that hit me like a blow to the stomach. Jodi Picoult's writing style is powerful.

I am so impressed with this book. It was recommended to me by our district literacy consultant (thanks, 'ria!) and I plan to spend a lot of time delving into it this summer. Janet Angelillo has such great techniques and mini-lessons for revision. A definite must-have for Writing Workshop instruction.

This book is a MUST-READ. I was hesitant to read Columbine at first. Being a teacher and spending much of my childhood and teenage years in Colorado, the tragedy still feels very raw and painful to me. I grit my teeth and delved into this book, and I am so glad I did. Dave Cullen's exhaustive research shows through on each and every page. As a former journalist, I really appreciated that kind of work. He zeroes in on what motivated Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the teen killers. Harris was a classic psychopath full of hatred. Klebold was the quiet, depressed one who fixated on finding love. Sadly, the two connected and created their deadly plan. Cullen also takes on controversial material, including how the Jefferson County authorities covered up a lot of Columbine, and how they might have even been able to prevent it with good police work. Cassie Bernall, the young woman who has been raised to martyr status, is also focused in on by Cullen. It turns out Cassie may not have been shot to death because of her profession of faith after all.
READ THIS BOOK. It is deeply moving and enlightening at the same time.
I highly, highly recommend it.
