The premise for this series is that the nightwalker races - lycanthropes, vampires, demons, druids, shadowdwellers, and mistrals (that I know about so far) - live secretly side by side with the world we know. They are generally good people, but they have their madmen and criminals just like the humans do. The "formula" that all the books seem to follow so far is that a powerful leader or ruler in each of the societies falls in love with someone equally powerful in another nightwalker society, which was taboo for a thousand years until some of the discoveries of the first 4 books.

This book has the leader or the vampires (the Prince - Damien) falling for the 2nd in line to the throne of the lycanthropes (sister to the queen, the Princess Seeryna). What a happy fairytale couple they make - really! These books are all happily ever after material. Even though there is an element of formula to all the books so far, the way each couple falls in love is always very different from any of the other books, and each relationship seems unique. I don't know if Ms. Frank will be able to keep that up by book 10 or 15, but for now, she's doing a really great job of making each one different from the previous ones. She must have a grand plan for several more, because she has clearly hinted at three coming relationships, though I couldn't tell who would end up with whom, though I have one suspicion.

The relationship is the basis of the book, but there are always some subplots that tie the series together. The mad demon, Ruth, recruited the powerful enemy of the vampire prince, Nico, to her cause and gave him black art powers. They together raided the inter-species library discovered in the last book, killing nearly everyone in the library and stealing a magic book or two. Ruth also has been hanging out in Mistral land in France, looking for what, no one knows. She's getting stronger each encounter, and her outrageous attacks finally motivate the leaders of each Nightwalker race to create a sort of Nightwalker UN and full ambassadorial communications among each other's courts.

Thankfully, a few of the species have some skill in premonitions and reading the future, and several hints have been dropped that a better future lies ahead. If it weren't for that tendency of Ms. Frank's, I would fear this series degenerating into another Black Dagger Brotherhood. If you haven't read that one, it starts out hot and romantic and turned into a bleak urban fantasy the deeper you go read into it. ...less "
