"For the Good of the Cause" is a quick snapshot into Soviet-era Russia, and the hypocrisy of the ruling elite--characterized by political and economical maneuvering for personal gain (quite contrary to the Marxist ideals, of course). As Solzhenitsyn's narrator observes, "They were really capitalists at heart." Set up to contrast this group of bureaucrats--Solzhentisyn's villains, impure communists--are 900 students, attendees of a technical school with poor facilities and equipment, no dormitory. They are the true, pure communists. Afforded the opportunity to secure new facilities by doing the construction themselves, they work together for one another, truly "for the good of the cause." Ironically, this is the reason the students are given by the officials when they are told the building will be used for something else, despite their hard and free labor. It is for the good of the country with no thought toward their loss or well-being. ...less
