" A great, reaffirming read for anyone who has dared to be an individual and who have the boldness to stand up to "that which they no longer believe".

The only essay I have read of Benjamin's is the work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. Great for anyone who is seeking answers to why our world, and most specifically art and religion, is so radically different in the age of motion pictures, television, and now the internet. Perfect to read with Simulaacra and Simulation because Benjamin makes predictions that the "craft of the beautiful" was about to undergo profound change as it was liberated from the religious sanctuary in the early 20th century, and Jean Baudrillard helps one understand the socialogical implications of a mass media culture, namely asking if the desires we have are our own or are induced by the media who tell us--more appropriately advertise to specific cohorts--how to act, what to desire, and how to think....less

I only give this book a three because it gets rather boring at times. However, the messages within it are, fore sure, not to be ignored. Stoker sets his story in England, Netherlands, and Eastern Europe, places with worldviews ranging from Modernism to extreme traditionalism. As someone reading this can see, I have a penchant for books which deal with changing worldviews. Basically, Dracula examines the worldviews of High Modernism, and Extreme Traditionalism at the fin de siecle, a time of extreme anxiety as science was radidly supplanting traditional, Western religion. The characters who thrive are those who embody a mix of both modernism and traditionalism, while those who are extreme in either worldview perish. The message is simple: there are good things to both worldviews, like the benefits of medicine, but one cannot deny that there exists a hunger in every human heart for transcendance, for which modern science will never be able to find a substitute. ...less
