I agree that the characters are flat, and that somehow it feels a tad dated. I am not sure that today's kids would give a hang for Cusi as Clark has written it. It was more cerebral than I would have expected. Obviously great writing, and terrifically clever, but it didn't yank at my heart strings all that much. Each time I picked it up, I had to remind myself who the letter-writer was, and the recipient as well. Not an experience that was an escape, or sheer enjoyment, to me anyway. This is an amazing young adult novel! I could not stop reading it, and had my heart in my throat for most of the tale, wondering what the deal was with the big bad brother Eric, football star. A great read for adults or adolescents. Terrific classroom fodder for discussions on bullying, sibling abuse, and socio-economics from one school to the next.
