Loss and relationships seem to be the theme that ties all the stories together, and Lahiri has a way of writing so simply with dead on observation, of the complicated ways that loss impacts and its lingering effects. And the endings are a surprise. One ending left me with the hair on my arms standing straight up. I can't wait to read what she writes next. ...less

I had higher expectations for this book, too. It got rave reviews and the author is talented at conveying those complicated feelings in relationships in a way that made me stop and think. But the plot line wasn't great and neither was the "startling conclusion" as promised by the book jacket. The writing is excellent--bare and controlled, just like the main character. I give this 2 1/2 stars....less

This was a really bad book and the only reason I finished it is that I was on vacation and had limited reading material with me. I also kept thinking that it had to get better. In a nutshell: Southern debutante with a serious self-esteem problem (as well as drinking problem) continually chooses men who treat her badly and then she moons over them for years. If you're looking for a really funny read about Southerners try "The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood".
Save your time and read a book other than this one....less
