Really 3 1/2. Tademy does a great job weaving information from historical documents and family history into her beautiful account of more than four generations of women coming from slavery through the 1930s. She admits to having fictionalized much of her characters' motivations, an that part of her novel could have been a bit more precisely tied to historians' understanding of romantic and sexual relations, gender and power, and political economy in slavery and Jim Crow. Dialogue is also a bit flat - I tried to read it aloud and found it dissatisfying. Nonetheless, Cane River is a well-researched, rich, and a compelling read....less

I listened to Sedaris read these stories in an audiobook form, and I must admit that some of them were very enjoyable - the first sketch, in particular. Beyond that, though, the humor was lost in melancholy stories of a childhood in suburbia...while rich for its truth and reflection, it lacked the charm and humor of the earlier vignettes. ...less
