Since I have dogs, I really value my relationships with them and this book sometimes seemed like reading about my own life. The deep relationship the author and his family had with their dog Marley was incredibly funny and touching and of course made me think of every tear that poured out of me each time I've lost one of my furry babes. It's truly a great story of friendship, love, devotion and respect. Don't think I'm really ruining anything you couldn't see a mile away--but don't read the last few chapters anywhere public...like on plane....less

See my review on A Thousand Splendid Suns...I did not care for this book.
I liked learning about life in Afganistan before, during and after the Taliban and I could see a lot of historical research and reality went into it.
I did not like reading constantly from the protagonist's perspective--I have a hard time with books where there is nothing drawing me at all to the main character--nothing that makes me want to pull for them in hard times within the story.
That is this book. He is an awful selfish coward who I felt could never redeem himself even though the author attempted to give him that redemption at the end--didn't even come close to cutting it in my eyes since he was the one that either caused or set so much of the horrifying ruin and hardship to others that he tried to repair.
That made it overall a disappointment to me. (however, I adored the author's next book after this one!!)...less

The movie was crap--the book was a really great examination of unstable mental health--I loved the back and forth of the current day alternating with childhood and some of the hell that went with it to shape today's events (in the novel).
It was so heartbreaking at times--but there were some good times and love and just all-round "feel good" moments--which help make those times of need or instability that much sadder....less

It's been many years since I read this, but I rmember thinking it was incredibly good. I could not get over the fact that it was such a real-feeling novel from the perspective of the protagonist a woman who went through an amazing transformation in her physical self and as a result, in her life--but was written by a man. Unbelievably good....less
