Guillermo 's Recent Updates

The Silence of Medair by Andrea K. Höst
"For those who say all self-published works are dross - this book is a stunning counter example. The manuscript spent an unbelievable ten years - I'll say that again, TEN years! - languishing with a single publisher before the author withdrew it in..." Read more of this review »

The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf by Ambelin Kwaymullina
"This is a very impressive book written by an indigenous Australian author. Set three hundred years into the future, it is a dystopian story of our world after it has been wrecked by all the things our civilisation involves. Some small recovery has..." Read more of this review »

First and foremost, I have to say the book is not bad. Or maybe just not terrible. I mean, I am giving it two stars. Two stars is not terrible... right?

Be that as it may, it does have a lot of flaws: I could not help but feel the writing had a defin

Guillermo and 3 other people liked Kelly's status update
Kelly is on page 200 of 352 of Sex with Shakespeare: Nothing gets me like unvarnished and self examined honesty. Someone who has looked themselves in the mirror long enough to know what the truth is for them, at least right now. Keenan's got that. It's also the first biography I've read that feels like it was written for my generation- I don't need to translate a thing. I LOVE this.
Guillermo is on page 160 of 320 of Warship: While not the tightest writing I've read by far, the plot is certainly engaging, if a little slow. I mean, we know the basics of what's going to happen from the blurb, but it still takes a little less than half the book to get there.

Terry Pratchett
“A book has been taken. A book has been taken? You summoned the Watch," Carrot drew himself up proudly, "because someone's taken a book? You think that's worse than murder?"
The Librarian gave him the kind of look other people would reserve for people who said things like "What's so bad about genocide?”
Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!

W.S. Merwin
“Poetry is a way of looking at the world for the first time.”
W.S. Merwin

Ann Leckie
“Or is anyone’s identity a matter of fragments held together by convenient or useful narrative, that in ordinary circumstances never reveals itself as a fiction? Or is it really a fiction?”
Ann Leckie, Ancillary Justice

Lois McMaster Bujold
“And the Bastard grant us... in our direst need, the smallest gifts: the nail of the horseshoe, the pin of the axle, the feather at the pivot point, the pebble at the mountain's peak, the kiss in despair, the one right word.”
Lois McMaster Bujold, Paladin of Souls

Lois McMaster Bujold
“Once, she had been her parents' daughter. Then great, unlucky Ias's wife. Her children's mother. At the last, her mother's keeper. Well, I am none of these things now. Who am I, when I am not surrounded by the walls of my life?
