What an unusual, incredibly moving book. Actually, it seemed to be two books in one. I loved the main part, told by an unusual 10-year-old boy. I loved spending time with this character, and I loved following his journey of trying to solve the "mystery" left by his father. The other part, which was in the form of letters written by his grandparents, was not quite as enjoyable, IMO. I had a hard time understanding and accepting the grandparent characters. The boy was strange enough, but his grandparents were, well, downright weird, and I'm not sure the whole Dresden episode and the grandparents' difficulties really belonged in the story. I would have loved to learn more about the boy's father instead. If I could separate out the two storylines, I would give 5 stars to the boy's narrative, and 3 stars to the grandparents' narrative. Still, overall, definitely a good read -- an engrossing, sad tale of loss and grief. I forgot to mention: this book has one of the most extraordinary, emotionally affecting endings I've ever read/seen. (It's done partly in pictures, not words.) You probably won't be able to finish it with dry eyes, and you'll certainly never forget it. ...less

Our community is doing the "Time Machine" as its "one great read" selection this summer. Although the classic 1960s Rod Taylor movie is one of my all-time favorites, I had never actually read the book. Now I have. It's an amazing story, and I enjoyed comparing it to the movie -- they're different in several significant ways. However, as a work of fiction, I can't say it was a great read. The writing is rather dry, and the story is told in a curious dual-1st person style: it starts out with one of his friends telling the story, and then it switches to the main character telling the story. The whole thing is really fairly depressing, also, especially when he jumps so far into the future that he sees the death of the sun. Finally, the editor of the particular version I read was very annoying -- I found his many footnotes and endnotes to be intrusive and sometimes condescending. After awhile, I simply stopped reading them. I'm looking forward to the comunity discussions this summer, though. ...less

Once again, I loved the experience of reading Joyce Carol Oates. "The Falls" is beautifully written -- haunting, engrossing, fascinating. The story revolves around a family whose lives have been shaped by tragedy, against the backdrop of the powerful and mythical Niagara Falls and the historical event of Love Canal, one of the most infamous hazardous waste sites in American history. The story explores several very complicated, fascinating people, and themes relating to love, motherhood, courage and sacrifice, family and community, loss and grief, and class. A wonderful book, highly recommended....less
