2-23-2008: Just started reading this book. I had heard Junot Diaz read one of his short stories on the New Yorker Fiction podcast, and loved his (literary) voice. This book is proving to be good so far. I'm already feeling empathy for Oscar. I am also going back and forth to the computer to translate different Dominican words.
2-25-2008: LOVING this book! I love how Diaz weaves all these sci-fi references into this Dominican family story. A really exceptional book so far - breaks genre completely.
3/1/2008: Finished the book this morning. An incredible read. This book was up there with White Teeth, which is one of my all time favorites....less

2/14/2008: Just finished this wonderful book. I'm not into short story collections unless they are really gripping. Jhumpa Lahiri did it well with The Interpreter of Maladies. Sherman Alexie does it well with The Toughest Indian in the World. His sense of humor is charming, rife with racial politics. I laughed out loud several times. There is also a darker edge to this collection, with story, The Sin Eaters, which was well placed in the center of the book. I highly recommend this book!...less

1/26/2008: I just started reading this today. The language is floral, poetic. Sometimes that bothers me, but overall, it's working. I love reading books about Indians in postmodern day America.
1/31/2008: Horrible, horrible book! I was so disappointed. Divakaruni makes that fatal flaw of "telling" rather than "showing" the reader. As a result, you feel like you're being talked at. She wove some mysterious elements into the book, making the reader expect some sort of resolution. Instead, these mysteries fell flat. The way the book ends is so ridiculous. Overall, I would NOT recommend this book to anyone. The language can be poetic at times, but the structure and crafting of the story are incredibly weak. A great disappointment. ...less

1-5-2008: Just got this book. The opening is great, starting days after John Lennon was shot. She writes a great bit about why people reacted negatively to John & Yoko.
1-17-2008: Really liking this book. Fitch has very striking imagery. You can feel how dirty and out of control Josie is in this book, driving around LA in a jalopy, a bottle of vodka between her knees. Josie's nemesis is by contrast very clean and wealthy, but also out of control in a completely different way. I think the author does a great job with these two characters.
1-25-2008: Just finished reading this book. An incredible read. She captures a highly unusual dynamic between the protagonist and antagonist. Fitch also manages to throw some curveballs to surprise the reader. ...less
