A little dry at times, and slightly repetitive, but if you are interested in our global food supply, this is an eye-opening book. It took me a while to get through it, but at times the stories were so compelling that it was hard to put down. Good for a serious summer read when you will have plenty of time to think. ...less

I got this at City Lights bookstore in SF, and started through it on the plane ride home. If Barbara Kingsolver makes me want to eat fresh local food, Alice Waters makes me want to eat GOOD food (mostly local, all from an easily-identifiable source). You will find yourself eyeing the specialty cheese counter, and wishing you had a bigger kitchen. This was a lot of fun for me to read, and has definitely affected the way I eat- in a good way :-)...less

Although I agree with much of what Pollan brings to light, I am not a fan of his writing style. I listed this as "read", but I didn't actually get all the way through it. He tends to repeat certain points, and sometimes in a not very effective way. I did glean some good information, though, and would recommend the book if you are at all interested in the long path that most of our food takes to get to the table. It is probably more engaging if most of what he says is new to you- I felt like I was being told the same thing over and over....less

"Do you appreciate the beauty of a good parking spot in NYC? Calvin Trillin does. If you haven't ready anything by Trillin yet, you will find yourself laughting out loud at the unlikely story of a chronic parker.

This book is excellent! I read it in November, which is a painful time for trying to find local food in Connecticut, but it stayed with me until the spring, and I'm now shopping at the farmers market and have a garden. It is not just a lesson on where we get our food, it is also riotously funny at times, and a very good story. I highly recommend it. ...less
