"When I grow up, I want to be Jane Eyr-ee and be a perfect girl. One major, two humongous, three monstrous oddities looked over because I'm kind...and I always give people the benefit of the doubt even though I've never been treated well in my whole life, so I really shouldn't know how to treat another person kindly, but that just shows you how truly perfect I am." (Sing that song from the "I'm a Mormon" cassette "When I Grow Up", [which Lisa and I altered to fit our teenage feminism] and I know the words don't quite fit the rhythm, but if you were Jane Eyre, you would patiently help me work out my timing and rhyming and then give me 2000 pounds for my efforts.)

A perfect book for nonintellectual reading aka pleasure reading. I do like the way Angie Sage writes, she's funny and light. I think I told Pili this, Sage is a great writer of the quirky nonessentials. The Septimus Heap books are like Dickens' _David Cooperfield_ in that the most interesting character is not the protagonist, but the swirling mass of supporting roles....less

Alright Kirsti, I finally finished it! We can talk. I'll call you soon...
There are a lot of really good reviews out there. They show the weaknesses, holes, and great parts of Breaking Dawn, so I'm not gonna go there. I'll just go with what I felt.
I liked the ending. I'm glad it was happy. I think it was a little too quickly and conveniently happy. Perhaps a little less Jacob angst and a little more reality to the fantasy would have helped. I think that comes from us, the readers, demanding a book be written so quickly.
But the biggest let down from the series is that it turns out vampires, Bella (sob) included, are a massively selfish race of beings.
I was hoping that Bella could bring some humanity into the lot. I mean they have all these super powers and they use them to play the stock market? People, animal, plants, EARTH is dying from so many horrors and the "good" vampires are worried about the newest, fastest car? Edward knows what world leaders are thinking, Alice can see what they'll do next, and Jasper can calm it all down. But no. They'd rather hole up in luxury while the other vampires eat us.
I'm really tired of us humans, the origins of all these magical peoples, being the pee-ons. Harry Potter doesn't need muggles to save the world and vampires use us to satisfy their appetites. Bummer.

This book got a little far-fetched. The previous Jacky Faber books are mildly unreal, but this book reads like a tall tale, which is perhaps the objective, but I sense that the story is getting more wild to cover the lack of substantial material. Hopefully the series ends sooner than later. All good things must come to an end, so they say....less
