A hilarious upending of meso-American, Greek, and Christian mycology in a surprisingly short 140 pages or so. I'd have loved to see this further developed and expanded, but I quite enjoyed it as is.

Note: This is the second Discworld novel I've read, and it's been eight years since I read The Color of Magic, so my rating my change based on how much I do or don't like the other ones.

That said - I absolutely loved this, definitely more than CoM. I

Great premise, but it's slow to start and the authors seem only able to depict the women characters (with the exception of the Russian cosmonaut) in terms of whom they're bonking.

There are only a couple of people whom it was easy to root for, the res

Absolutely fantastic read.

The action is nearly non-stop, and the few unanswered questions have me wishing for the next volume. Camorr may not be Renaissance Venice, but the parallels are too much to ignore - and that of the Throne of Therin with the

A wonderful meditation on the consequences of colonialism - whether or not that was Mr. Bradbury's intention I can't tell you, but it was impossible for me *not* to see the parallels.

Also, in the chapter called Usher II, when he writes of books being

Any novel about imperial China needs to be epic in scope, and this one certainly is, evoking the idea of the exotic country in a far away place...

There are, however some major failings. Spoilers below:

1) The novel takes a while to 'get going'. The fi

This is not something I should have read on my own; I am lucky to have read King Leopold's Ghost beforehand, to understand the setting, but even so it's full of references that an average reader (I include myself here) might miss.

It's a novella, but
