Really interesting; while Jewish people like myself have practiced circumcision (um, that sounds weird but I haven't actually circumcised anyone) for centuries, the argument the authors present in terms of the prophylactic value of circumcision regar...more

Poisoned by Jeff Benedict

A fascinating read about the E. Coli epidemic in the early nineties; however Benedict's writing left much to be desired - it's hard to turn real life into a compelling drama, but at many points I thought things were perhaps a bit over-the-top; the st...more

Very persuasive arguments. I don't agree with everything (YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE MY CARBS FROM ME) and at times seems a little worshipful of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle, but from a scientific point of view it's hard to refute the argument he put...more
Twelve Patients by Eric Manheimer
" Only kept reading because the patients were so interesting, both as illustrations of the kinds of cases that come to Bellevue, and as a lens through which to examine current topics in medicine today. I even liked the author's personal cancer story... " Read more of this review »
Twelve Patients by Eric Manheimer
" This book was definitely worth picking up, but isn't going to stick in my mind as much as I thought it was. While the stories of the twelve patients were interesting, the writing bothered me. Manheimer is extremely verbose, and some of the tales c... " Read more of this review »

Great concept, but wholly unrealistic dialogue and half of the book was a primer on Latin American history. The chapters dealing with Mannheim's own battle with cancer and Arnie in AA, were well done.

Offit is preaching to the choir here; it's a book that should be read by anyone who is even thinking about delaying or not vaccinating their children, but I think for the majority of us, it's not too hard to figure out why not vaccinating is so dange...more

A bit too academic at times, although the different ways to view Mary Mallon and what happened to her - in scientific, sociological, etc contexts - are fascinating. Still, there were a number of times that I was a bit bored, and felt like I was readi...more

An excellent, highly readable look at how certain preconceived notions can color doctors' thinking in multiple areas of medicine, stressing the importance of not relying too much on data templates or machines, and remember the human aspect of medicin...more

A scathing indictment of a medical system woefully underprepared for a major disaster in an area where such a disaster could have been predicted. It's easy to condemn Dr. Pou now, but in the chaos of a major disaster many of us might do things that a...more
