I knew nothing about leprosy and all of my knowledge about Hawaii was either from James Michener's book by the same name or from my daughter who just visited there. Joyce's book takes you to the island and you are in the middle of the sights & smells; fears & grief of the those who were banished to the leprosy settlement. I loved Blue. Not only did I learn about the polio epidemic in Hickory, NC, but also how good a writer Joyce Hostetter is! She made the period and the people come alive for me. My friend's 6th grade daughter read it in less than 24 hours. Highly recommend it for kids and adults--particularly the 70 + generation who remember what it was like to live through the polio epidemic. ]]>
