Meh.
The plot line and story leaves something to be desired. But the way in which the writer captures moments and weaves in amazingly descriptive sentences has an alluring - and redeeming - affect on the read.
This certainly doesn't top his debut, The Stolen Child, but if you like a book blurred with magical realism, then definitely consider this one. ]]>

This is more of a 3.5 rating. Sometimes it was a 3.75 and at rare moments, a 4.0. But the changing perspective and final reveal (the clumsiness of it, actually) is what evens this book out to be a so-so good read.
It took me about 100 pages to finally latch on to the story. I almost gave up, to be honest with you, but in the end, the perseverance was worth it.
This book has moments of poetic descriptions that are a delight to read. But, for the most part, I found the writing to be of an average storyteller. It's definitely a debut novel, but I see alot of promise in the future for this author. Especially if she sticks to what she knows -- that being the eclectic Salem, Mass.
Overall, I do recommend this. I can definitely see why it was categorized as a "book club" book, though. Nothing earth shattering but enough moments of fine writing to warrant a read. ]]>
