Sometimes I think I'm getting tired of the Dave Robicheaux novels. Dave is always talking about the same issues, but then I pick up a new one, and while the main character is all too human in that he doesn't change much and keeps making the same mistakes and worrying about the same problems, the writing and characters surrounding him are superb.
Burke's description of the aftermath of Katrina is a reason to read this book all on its own....less

I try to read this book every year and I have to say that this year was the first time it did not absorb my attention completely. The early stories were the best, but also the most depressing. "The Toga Party" was a good example of this. Alice Munro and and Stellar Kim also gave good solid material. In fact a lot of it was "good" and "solid" without being page-turning. I had trouble caring about many of the characters. ...less

I finally got rid of this series of books a few years ago at a garage sale after I had drug them from pillar to post and I still regret it. I could pick up any book in the series, much like the Narnia books, and be sucked right back in.
The characters were realistic in their nitpicking and arguments while engaging in a fun and fantastic quest. Treasure maps, evil geniuses, it really has it all....less

"Read this book on a plane and got the kind of looks usually reserved for the parents of screaming children from chortling, guffawing, snorting, etc...
Gonna learn something? Not likely, but it's a fun piece of fluff.
