Even though I read this after having seen the HBO MOVIE EVENT, I think the original script adds a lot. There's some stuff, especially in Perestroika, that reasonably couldn't have been included in the HBO adaptation. It's also interesting to know which actors were originally designated to which roles: Hannah is supposed to be Roy's doctor, for instance. I'd love to see this staged.
But all comparisons aside, this is one fuckingly amazing, ambitious, wonderful piece of work. I know it's already been pretty much canonized, but I think that distinction will stick around for a long time....less

But it's a great investigation of Haitian society, and the way Roumain blends first- and third-person narration is really interesting, especially given his culture's narrative tradition....less

These stories are gruesome and tender in a really hard-to-define way. My favorites, like "Notes for My Biographer," stretch reality and mess around with form. Even when the characters reach really bizarre extremes, of mania or depression or self-loathing, they are never unsympathetic. It's a great sample of what you can do with a short story, and it pushes "gay literature" in directions I really like. ...less

"I read this because of the poem "I Do Not Know," which I would give five stars. The rest of the book doesn't really do it for me. This guy's really talented and one could learn a lot from him if one were willing. I don't know. Maybe you'll
