I didn't rate this book as highly as "How to Talk to a Widower", but it still left me with the feeling that Jonathan Tropper must be quite a guy. I find his combination of sweetness and sarcasm appealing. I guess what I had a tough time relating to was the horribly dysfunctional family dynamics. They seemed a bit contrived. I also had a hard time relatiing to the main character's reaction to a major plot point - it just didn't ring true to me, especially after the build up which I thought was right on. I don't want to be more specific, because I don't want to ruin it for those who have the book on their list to read. I definitely will read "The Book of Joe" at some point, but I'm going to move to another author for now. ...less

I wrote a review of this and managed to lose it somehow before posting. I thoroughly enjoyed the book - so much so that I am almost half of the way through "Everything Changes", one of his other books. He's a very sensitive, funny guy and I could really relate to his depiction of some of the widower's thoughts in this book - things like "I once had a wife and now she's gone which he keeps repeating like a mantra, almost as if he has to keep making the assertion to make sure it isn't lost to the world. It brought back to me the feeling that I had of not really understanding how it seems possible that the world can just go on as if nothing has happened when you have experienced such a profound loss and how hard you work to appear normal and how much you don't want to face what others say to you for months afterward because it threatens to peel away the facade of sanity that you manage to create each day that follows until you finally find your footing again. He did a very sensitive job of making it clear that the death of someone who has been so much a part of you and the fabric of your life doesn't end the relationship or the need....less

Two words best describe my reaction to this book - NOT GOOD.
It is a true story written by the sister of a woman who has been killed by her ex. I am always drawn to books with sister connections because I always wonder if other people have the same kind of sister relationship. From what I can tell, the answer is a resounding NO. I feel sorry for them....less

What can I say - I would love to have Stephanie Plum as a friend, and I love her grandma, too. I spend time trying to imagine who could possibly play these parts in a move - particulary Ranger and Morelli! From what I understand, some production company purchased the rights to one of her books quite some time ago, but they're not in any hurry to develop it. Too bad. I definitely would not want to miss the movie!...less

I have read all of the books in Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies' No. 1 Detective Agency series. I find them simple and sweet and I appreciate Precious Ramatswe's pure outlook on life and her ability to see the best in people. The series either hooks you or not. I have several friends that have read and enjoyed all of these, as well. I tried one of his other series (He's quite prolific), but couldn't get into it. Suprisingly, it was the one about residents of an apartment in Scotland. I was very disappointed that I found the characters boring....less

Excellent page turner. This was a super-fast read. I picked it up from the library on Saturday afternoon and finished on Tuesday evening even though I read only in the evenings. I do enjoy this Irishman's books. I have seen a couple of the Border video interviews with him talking about his books and about the Amazon Kindle, and he seems like a really nice guy who loves to read and write and he created a wonderful Page Turners Charity to get people excited about writing and reading. ...less
