"I went to see Li-Young Lee last night and his poems make me cry and laugh at the same time. His work is permeated by a hush. My favorites are Immigrant Blues, Self-Help for Refugees, and After the Pyre.

I'm noticing that every time I review a book, I tend to present a somewhat unsophisticated gender critique. I must be turning into a feminist. Uh-oh.
I've only read the intro so far, but I'm guessing Foucault doesnt incorporate gender into his analysis. Repression and power- hello?! I get it, its the repression of the discourse on sexuality which creates the power, but sweet jesus, we're talking about sexuality! And if regulating reproduction, including the discourse around it, doesnt disproportionately impact having power and control on women and their bodies, then what does?!
I'm going to stop before this completely devolves into an incoherent diatribe. ...less

Perkins irritates me. In his world, the only women who exist are exotic, beautiful, and are interested in fucking him. Also, he's not particularly intelligent or motivated- causing me to be frightened by the idiocy of the people who are truly running things. I guess its nice that he ends with ten things you can do, or whatever, but i'm not super impressed by his suggestions. Read only so you can bash it at parties with other radical intellectuals. ...less

Damn. I've probably read Ender's Game one hundred times in my life. The sequels and shadow series ad infinitum fluctuate in quality, but the most recently released books in the shadow series are downright racist, which has taxed the affection I have developed for the characters over the years. Still, Ender's Game itself deserves a five, although I've been meaning to write Orson Scott Card a strongly worded letter for over a year now. ...less
