Ticktock was a pretty good book. I really liked the idea of the continually growing and changing demonic mimican nemesis and its relentless nature. I also enjoyed having the main character be Vietnamese, which was a fun perspective, and something a little different than the usual white American protagonist. I have found, so far anyway, that the characters in Koontz’s novels are sort of the comic relief for a stressful scenario. This is kind of fun, but the banter gets to be a little much when I am wanting a good scary read like my favorite horror novel, “Intensity” (another novel by Dean Koontz). I gave this book 3 stars because I really liked the beginning of the book and I was really excited about the story’s potential, but I was a bit disappointed in the ending. Also, as interesting and funny as Del and her family was, the dynamics there were a little too bizarre for me. Overall, Ticktock is a fun read, but not the kind of horror story that I was hoping for. ...less

This was a fun book. I really like John Grisham. He is one of those authors that can keep me entertained from cover to cover. The Partner was no exception. The fun part about this book, for me, was cheering for the "criminal" like in A Time To Kill were you feel the protagonist is completely justified in his actions; same type of thing here. In this book there is no "good" guy. There are only differnet kinds of "bad" guys.
The ending really surprised me too, it kind of upset me right after I finished the book, but the more I think about it, the more I really liked it. If you haven't read this book yet, and you like Grisham, read The Partner.
Although I really enjoyed this book, I only gave it 4 stars as a book really needs to be extraordinarily awesome for my 5 star rating. ...less

I don't think this book is for everyone, especially those who have a hard time forgiving themselves or that linger on all of their faults. It certainly is a humbling book that opens your eyes to just how carnal and sinful the natural man is. It also gives you a sense of how hard it is to truely be Christlike and how much further we need to go for our eternal welfare. However, I think that the book does it's job well as it teaches us how important the atonement really is and how we need to utilize it everyday. The book humbles you, gives you hope, and makes you want to change your life for the better. My recommendation is, like so many others, if you start this book, you must finish it. The book is divided into 3 parts. Sin, Repentance, & Forgiveness. If you stop reading during the portion about sin, you will probably walk away from the book a bit depressed. Keep in mind that just as the part about sin is depressing, the portion on forgiveness is equally uplifting....less

I liked this book better than the first, but not enough to give it 3 stars. I would give it 2.5 stars if I could. I think that Christopher Paolini has some good ideas but he also seems to steal themes from other novels as well. I enjoyed the parts about Eragon's training and I liked the surprise villain at the end. I really think that the magic aspect in this world is very interesting (especially the magic that is forbidden to teach) and I want to read more about it, but instead we have an abundance of other uninteresting things that fill this book. For example, the elves celebration; where everybody gets drunk and shares some kind of talent like a song, a poem, or a craft. Man, some people may really like this stuff, but to me it is Paolini's cheap attempt to write like Tolkien. I also HATE the names in these novels, you know what I mean, the names you can never remember because they are so hard to pronounce. The writer is young and he sure does a lot better job than anything I could write, but I think his stories appeal to a much younger crowd. However, I think the 3rd installment in this series should be good because there is so much still to resolve. Paolini doesn’t resolve much of anything in the first 2 books, so if he ends the series with a trilogy, the 3rd book should be quite exciting. ...less
