<about>My parents inspired my love of reading beginning when I was very young. My mom read out loud to me often, especially during long weeks in the hospital on several occasions; and my dad always seems to have a book on hand, wherever he goes.

I love fiction: escaping to new places and times fascinates me, especially when I'm guided by a good author who gives me intelligent, realistic, honorable characters to meet along the way. I stick mostly with children's and young adult literature because - in my experience - they are generally cleaner and have more lovable characters. I find that I am primarily a character-driven reader.

My non-fiction fare generally consists of religious or scientific books - I'm not much into history or bios, though I'd be interested in expanding my horizons with a good recommendation.

I have a very low tolerance for offensive content (excessive swearing, grisly violence, or smutty scenes): having any of these is the only reason I ever give a book only one star.

My ratings are based more on my personal experience reading a book than on its perceived value as a piece of literature. I realize I'm a rather picky reader, and even a relatively "clean" book is likely to bother me if the characters are amoral, terribly whiny, or just plain dumb.

</about>
