A deeply researched and analyzed description of the early scientific debates about what would be called HIV and the early AIDS meds, especially AZT, it's a little "inside baseball" for the general reader, and like most sociology, it ignores a great deal of psychology and emotion (or dismisses it). But for what it is, it's fantastic. (less)

This is the central text of the American AIDS epidemics first decade. It's a brilliantly researched and constructed book, and it's devastating. Reading contemporary criticisms of it, I was surprised by their viciousness -- especially since they were all predicted by Shilts in the text. It's long but it's definitive and necessary and it shaped the discourse of AIDS for years.(less)
